About our Curriculum

Our curriculum is based upon developmental psychology. Before the age of ten, a child's language acquisition is easy and fluid. If, due a family move, for example, a child is exposed to a new language when very young, he or she will simply pick it up. At this early stage, speaking a language is a very simple skill. In fact it is so simple that it does not necessarily take permanent root. Therefore if children only learn to speak a language at this stage, they can very easily forget it.

If a second language is to be retained over the long term, it is crucial to acquire reading and writing skills early on. This is because reading and writing form new neural pathways in the brain. The new language is literally ‘hardwired’ into the child’s mind. And once children have these new reading and writing skills, they are able to continue learning by themselves. They choose their own books and build an ever-widening vocabulary. At Cosmos, our curriculum is designed so that students learn - and retain - the English language.

The way the Japanese education system is structured means that once children enter elementary school, they get busy studying the Japanese curriculum right away. There is a lot less time to spend studying English and so their progress in English slows down. However, if they have learned to read and write English at an early stage, they will be able to continue to develop their skills in English.

We believe that if the learning environment is stimulating and fun, children learn easily. When children are given the proper skills to learn, their world opens up and their imagination soars.

Therefore, in order to assure our student’s long-term retention of the English language, we have devised the following curriculum:

<Cosmos Preschool student’s age> <American Textbook Level>
Head Start
Preschool (3~4years old)
Preschool(4~5years old)
Preschool(5~6years old)
Native Preschool/Kindergarten
・K/Grade1
・Grade1/2
・Grade2/

As education stands today, once a child enters elementary school, they have a lot less time to spend learning English and progress will naturally slow down.
However, with native speakers they will be able to keep up the pace and continue to progress.

We believe that in a fun and stimulating environment, children can learn with pleasure and ease.
When we give children the proper skills to learn,
their world becomes unlimited and their imagination knows no bounds.
